Mr. Baum, the Managing Shareholder of Matis Baum O’Connor, is a founding member of the firm. He has been selected as a “Super Lawyer” in every year from 2007-20. Mr. Baum focuses his practice on the representation of physicians, nursing homes, and other healthcare providers, particularly in the defense of medical malpractice lawsuits, and in related contract and employment litigation. Mr. Baum has extensive trial experience, having tried over 100 cases in his career. Mr. Baum also represents healthcare professionals in administrative matters involving professional licensing, certification, credentialing, discipline, and privileges. He has defended medical providers in malpractice and related lawsuits (including wrongful discharge, breach of contract, and defamation) in state and federal courts and in alternative dispute resolution forums throughout Western and Central Pennsylvania. Mr. O’Connor, a shareholder with Matis Baum O’Connor since 1994, has been selected as a “Super Lawyer” in every year from 2011-20. In 2018, Super Lawyers Magazine selected Mr. O’Connor as a “Top 50” attorney in Pittsburgh. He focuses his practice on the defense of physicians, hospitals, and nursing homes in the defense of medical malpractice cases. He also represents physicians in licensing matters before the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine. Mr. O’Connor has particular expertise in the defense of ophthalmologists, optometrists orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, ENT physicians, medical oncologists, and internists. Additionally, a portion of his practice is devoted to defending businesses in products liability matters, including elevator accidents and power line accidents. Mr. O’Connor has tried over 50 jury trials in counties across Western Pennsylvania and in the federal courts of the Western District and Middle District of Pennsylvania. In 2019, Super Lawyers Magazine selected Ms. Patchen Cullen as a “Top 50” attorney in Pittsburgh. She focuses her practice on medical malpractice defense, contract negotiation and litigation, including litigation of non-compete contracts and representation before state licensing boards, and personal injury litigation. She has represented specialty groups including interventional cardiology, OB/GYN, plastic surgery, urology, radiology, interventional radiology, family practice, internal medicine, nephrology, physiatry, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, gastroenterology, emergency medicine, pathology, neurology, otolaryngology (ENT), and pediatrics. Mr. Chmiel, a shareholder with Matis Baum O’Connor since 2009, has been selected as a “Super Lawyer” in every year from 2014-20. He focuses his practice in the defense of physicians and dentists, hospitals, long term care facilities, and a host of other healthcare and medical providers, including physicians assistants, nurses, physical therapists and certified nurse anesthetists to name a few. Mr. Feeney, a shareholder with Matis Baum O’Connor since 2011, was selected as a “Super Lawyers Rising Star” in every year from 2010-16. This is his first selection as a “Super Lawyer.” Mr. Feeney specializes in medical malpractice defense, nursing home litigation, physician licensing issues involving the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine, and appellate work. Mr. Feeney is an experienced Amicus practitioner, having represented various physician membership organizations at all levels of litigation. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Feeney was a staff attorney for Chief Justice Stephen A. Zappala of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and a law clerk for both the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office of General Counsel and the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office.
