Mr. O’Connor has been a member of the firm for 24 years. His practice is devoted exclusively to the defense of physicians, nurses, physician assistants, hospitals, and nursing homes in medical malpractice cases.  Brian has represented physicians of all specialties including emergency medicine, radiology, ophthalmology, optometry, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, otolaryngology, radiation and medical oncology, pulmonology and internal medicine. Brian also frequently represents physicians in licensing matters before the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine.

Mr. O’Connor has tried over 60 jury trials in all of the counties of Western Pennsylvania and the Federal Courts of the Western and Middle District of Pennsylvania. He has represented hundreds of physicians and nurses in mediations and arbitrations in healthcare-related litigation.

In 2025, Mr. O’Connor was inducted into the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers. Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation only and is limited to experienced trial lawyers, whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality.  In 2009, Brian was admitted as a member to the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County.  He has also been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, a lecturer to physician groups and the Pennsylvania Bar Institute.  Brian is also a member of the Healthcare Law Section of the Allegheny County Bar Association.  

Since 2009, Brian has been recognized as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer for the defense of medical negligence cases. Since 2016, Brian has been recognized in the publication, Best Lawyers in America, for his work in the practice area of “Medical Malpractice Law- Defendants.”  In 2019, that same publication recognized Mr. O’Connor as the Lawyer of the Year in the defense of physicians in Medical Malpractice cases.

Prior to joining Baum O’Connor Cullen Chmiel, Mr. O’Connor served as an Assistant District Attorney in Allegheny County, where he tried multiple jury trials and over a hundred non-jury trials.  

Brian is active in the Pittsburgh community. He served for two decades as President of Christian Housing, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to providing housing to the elderly poor. Brian is also a Past President of the Pittsburgh chapter of the St. Thomas More Society.

Brian is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, District of Columbia and Federal courts for the Western and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania.

 Defense Verdict for Emergency room Physician Assistant in alleged failure to diagnose spinal cord compression in Washington County.

 Defense verdict on behalf of retinal specialist in alleged failure to properly perform sub-tenons injection. 

 Directed verdict in favor of radiology group in Washington County

Plaintiff alleged family practice physician was negligent in treatment of congestive heart failure.  Jury verdict in favor of the defense in Westmoreland County.

 Plaintiff alleged podiatrist was negligent during the performance of heel spur surgery. Jury verdict in favor of defense in Butler County.

Plaintiff alleged ENT surgeon was negligent in retained pledget during ZMC surgery. Verdict in favor of defense on motion for non-suit after 2 days of trial.

Plaintiffs alleged failure to adequately treat glaucoma resulting in blindness. Verdict for defense

Plaintiff claimed radiologist failed to properly interpret CT scan of abdomen and pelvis resulting in delay in diagnosis of Thymoma. Verdict for defense.

Plaintiff claimed obstetrician/gynecologist was negligent for perforating ureter during C-Section. Verdict for defense.

Plaintiff claimed failure to diagnose pituitary tumor resulting in blindness. Non-suit granted after six days of trial.

Plaintiffs alleged failure to timely diagnose lung cancer. Verdict for defense
